Prange\, Ph.D.\, P.E.\, Senior Biomechanical Engineer at Paragon Forensics will present “Concussion Claims in Litigation: Applying Science to Questions of Causation”. \nConcussions are frequently alleged injuries in personal injury and product liability litigation\, yet establishing whether a specific event caused a concussion is often far more complex than the diagnosis itself. This presentation examines the scientific and evidentiary issues surrounding concussion claims\, with an emphasis on the relationship between accident mechanics\, head kinematics\, biomechanical loading\, medical findings\, and reported symptoms. \nDesigned for litigators handling motor vehicle collisions\, premises liability\, sports\, and product liability cases\, this session will discuss how biomechanical principles can assist in evaluating whether an incident produced loading conditions consistent with the claimed injury. Attendees will gain practical insight into the strengths and limitations of biomechanical analysis\, the role of objective and subjective medical evidence\, common misconceptions regarding concussion causation\, and strategies for effectively examining treating physicians\, medical experts\, and biomechanical engineers during deposition and trial. Through case examples and current scientific literature\, participants will develop a framework for critically assessing head injury causation and distinguishing scientifically supported opinions from unsupported assumptions.

SUMMARY:PDI LUNCH TIME WEBINAR - ARCCA will present "Accident Reconstruction After Hours"
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 76% of pedestrian fatalities occurred during the dark lighting conditions.  A decrease in effect on the performance of the human visual system with a reduction in visual acuity.  a driver’s ability to detect and recognize potential and immediate hazards is influenced by a number of factors\, such as illumination\, luminance or contrast\, size\, pattern\, eccentricity\, and adaptation luminance.  Accident reconstructionists are frequently asked to evaluate at what oint in time an object or pedestrian would have been detectable or recognizable to an approaching driver. This presentation will cover analysis techniques such as headlight and streetlight mapping\, low-illumination photography\, luminance measurements\,m and the application of small target visibility (STV) models to field data. Additionally several case studies will be presented that demonstrate how these quantitative and scientific principles can be applied to incidents involving lighting and conspicuity issues.
